The history of Malayalam dates back as back to 1911, the very beginning of the college. Among the first courses offered was Malayalam Vidwan, though it was long before the course was renamed and formalized into an undergraduate program in 1966. Postgraduate program was launched in less than two years, in 1968, and the department was bestowed with the status of a research center 1977. With nine members and an inexhaustible synergetic strength, the department is right in front of every facet of the college. In terms of publications, research output, writings, resources and social interventions, the department is simply unique.
